Dance and dancing
The dance is an expression of spirit embodied in the form of motion which is usually combined with the music. Dancing is also related with the moment, can be described about an event: the war, sorrow, reverence to the king, or the embodiment of a norm, such as dedication of a woman in a great culture.

The development of dance in Indonesia is closely related with the development of society. James R. Brandon (1967) divided the development of performances in Southeast Asia can be divided into four periods, namely:
1. Pre-historic period, approximately 2500SM-100M.
2. The entry of Indian culture period, 100-1000.
3. The influence of the Islamic period, from 1300 to 1750.
4. Period of entry of the western states, 1750-end of the second world war.
Development of society and the arts are not an outgrowth of being cut off from each other, but mutually sustaining and is not broken.
